چکیده

0. Combinations of Sonority and Stress In their analysis of Imdlawn Tashlhiyt Berber syllabification, Prince and Smolensky (1993) postulate that different types of prominence, such as sonority and syllabicity, should align—a phenomenon they term prominence alignment. This concept is implemented by Prince and Smolensky using families of inherently-ranked constraints that are derived from combining phonetic prominence scales. The type of constraints they use are illustrated in (1), along with the prominence scales used to derive them:

Interpreting Sonority-Projection Experiments: The Role of Phonotactic Modeling

A variety of experiments support the existence of “sonority projection”: speakers represent severe sonority sequencing violations ([lba]) as less wellformed than modest ones ([bda]), even though neither is present in their native language. One interpretation of such findings is that the Sonority Sequencing Principle ([9]) is part of Universal Grammar. Modeling study, however, suggests that the ...

Sonority profile and temporal organization of clusters: evidence from Russian

It is well-known that consonant clusters obeying the sonority sequencing principle are universally preferred over clusters violating it; what is less clear is the status of sonority violating clusters in languages that have them. These clusters could betray their typological " markedness " by differing from sonority-obeying clusters in the same language. However, it may actually be the case tha...

The Error-driven Ranking Model of the Acquisition of Phonotactics

Knowledge of the phonotactics of a language is knowledge of the distinction between licit and illicit sounds and sound combinations. For instance, English speakers know that blik could be a licit English word while bnik could not, although both are unattested. In carefully controlled experimental conditions, nine-month-old infants already react differently to licit and illicit sound combination...

A Phonetic Basis for the Sonority of [X]

Sonority is a property of segments that relates to phonotactics and syllable shape but whose nature remains in dispute. Clements (1990) uses this property to define the order that segments may occur in a syllable in what he calls the sonority sequencing principle (SSP), which says that “between any member of a syllable and the syllable peak, only sounds of higher sonority rank are permitted.” H...

It is not all downhill from here: Syllable Contact Law in Persian

Syllable contact pairs cross-linguistically tend to have a falling sonority slope, a constraint which is called the Syllable Contact Law (SCL). In this study, the phonotactics of syllable contacts in 4202 CVC.CVC words of Persian lexicon is investigated. The consonants of Persian were divided into five sonority categories and the frequency of all possible sonority slopes is computed both in lex...
